As the name implies, Velvet Spinach Smoothie, this one is very smooth –– not sweet, not tart, just right.
As you get used to making smoothies, you will begin to put combinations together that work to your taste. I think in all the time I’ve been making smoothies, I’ve only had to throw one out because it was so unpalatable. I don’t remember what the combination was now, but it was horrible…I can tell you that much.
I almost always just use water. Of course, you can use whatever plant-based milk you desire, but for some reason (and I really don’t know what that reason is), I stick only to water. Juices, unless they are fresh, usually have sugar added, so I would stay away from these for the liquid.
About a cup of water, a frozen banana, a cup of berries, and about 2 cups of greens will give you a delightful smoothie. If your fruit is frozen, you will not need ice. If your fruit is fresh, a handful of ice cubes will give you a cold refreshing drink. Too warm and it’s not palatable.
Always freeze your overripe bananas just for this purpose. Keep other frozen fruits on hand, as well. Here’s a tip: If your strawberries are fresh, and you have a high-speed blender, add the stems and all. More nutrients here too.
My daughter gave me a glass straw for Christmas one year. It’s kind of fun to drink from a glass straw. Also, drink your smoothie as soon as you can for the utmost freshness. Smoothies will keep in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Store the extra in a covered mason jar. Mason jars with screw-on lids are great if you’re short-term traveling, rather than a cup or mug.
